Keep Toowoomba Cool Report

We are excited to share a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance Toowoomba's resilience to the growing frequency of extreme heat events.

The Darling Downs Environment Council has just released a comprehensive report titled "Keep Toowoomba Cool," to advocate for increased tree canopy cover in our beloved city.

(*Yes this is a odd thing to be doing after probably our coldest week of the year!)

You can access the full report here.

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • Rising Heatwaves: As temperatures continue to rise, Toowoomba's urban areas are turning into heat islands, posing severe risks to residents' health, especially the most vulnerable.
  • Health and Well-being: Increasing tree canopy cover can significantly improve mental and physical health, reduce hospital admissions, and provide cooler spaces for outdoor activities.
  • Environmental and Economic Impact: Protecting and expanding our tree canopy will not only safeguard our local wildlife but also enhance property values and reduce economic losses caused by extreme heat.

In the report we are urging the Toowoomba Regional Council to:

  1. Set Local Canopy Coverage Goals: Establish specific tree canopy targets for each suburb.
  2. Fund Climate Risk Management: Complete and implement the Climate Risk Management Plan.
  3. Protect Mature Trees: Safeguard existing mature trees from urban development.
  4. Adopt Measurable Environmental Policies: Replace or amend the Green Infrastructure Strategy with robust environmental objectives.
  5. Community Engagement: Directly educate, engage and involve the community on climate adaption strategies.

How You Can Help:

  1. Spread the Word: Share our report and campaign details with your networks to raise awareness about the importance of increasing Toowoomba's tree canopy.
  2. Engage with Local Representatives: Contact your local council members to express your support for our recommendations.
  3. Participate in Events: Join us at Civic Square next to Toowoomba Town Hall and the Library at 11 AM on Thursday the 25th for the official press event. Deputy Mayor Cr Rebecca Vonhoff and Cr Edwina Farquhar joining us to release the report. RSVP here.

By working together, we can make Toowoomba a cooler, greener, and more liveable region for everyone.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our environment.
