Keep Toowoomba Cool Petition

Every summer, Queenslanders confront increasingly severe extreme weather events, including floods, storms, cyclones, and heatwaves, all exacerbated by climate change. These events not only threaten the safety and well-being of our communities but also strain our economy. To adequately prepare for these hazards, proactive measures from local governments are essential to enhance resilience to extreme weather events.

The Issue at Hand:

The Darling Downs Environment Council is particularly concerned about the impact of heatwaves in the Toowoomba region. As temperatures rise, urban areas become heat islands, exacerbating the effects of heatwaves on residents' health and well-being. To address this pressing issue, DDEC has started the Keep Toowoomba Cool Campaign to urge Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) to take decisive action to enhance the city's resilience to heatwaves. We are working with the community to advocate protections for mature trees and localised and time based canopy coverage targets to create corridors of cooling with the right trees in the right place.

Toowoomba Regional Council plays a vital role in enhancing the city's resilience to heatwaves and other climate-related hazards. By implementing the proposed actions outlined above, TRC can take proactive steps to mitigate the impacts of heatwaves, safeguarding the well-being of residents and the sustainability of our communities. It is imperative that TRC prioritizes climate adaptation and resilience-building measures to ensure a safer and more resilient future for Toowoomba.

Dear Toowoomba Regional Council,

Our summers are getting hotter and the great inequity in shady trees across our region means we are missing the opportunity to create corridors of cooling through having the right trees in the right places. We call on you to set ambitious time-based and localised targets for tree canopy cover to help Keep Toowoomba Cool.

I would be happy to care for some street trees. In the early 90’s council would plant some trees on your verge if requested to and if the resident agreed to water regularly to get established. I did it in Dalby and although I don’t live there anymore, last I checked “my” trees still did.

Please council do the right thing by the people, our city, environment and wildlife get these tree planted. May I add native trees only. We have experts in the area who can guide you on this. Lisa from the Crows Nest Nursery could give you great advice if you would only seek it. Why is Toowoomba continually always behind in thinking? Do we really have to have petitions asking for street trees?

Trees selected should be native to the area, a decent size and all new developments should include a wildlife corridor.

Toowoomba is well known & admired for its old tree-lined streets….but the new suburbs are a great disappointment both to visitors & to those living there. Don’t let this continue & do plant up the streets that remain bare.

Heatwaves aren’t just uncomfortable, they’re health hazards. Better plantings can make Toowoomba healthier and reduce energy use – it’s an all-win scenario. Of course appropriate trees must be selected for urban areas, but there are many suitable options.

I desire to be supportive, but may be hindered by constantly travelling to Brisbane to support family& groups with whom I have been affiliated for many years. I really would like to help when& if I can.

I have watched for the last 20 years , with the absolute clearing of all the fauna as the next housing estate goes in one after another. Just disgusting. All about making more available land and more money.
