Fire ants were first found in Brisbane, in 2001. The National Fire Ant Eradication Program slowed their spread for a while, but they are moving faster than predicted. Including to the very edge of Toowoomba We all need to educate ourselves about this horrible threat, lobby for more funding, and make sure weโre not part of the problem.

Fire ants are not โnormalโ ants. They are very aggressive and can swarm over you, causing great pain, long-lasting welts, severe allergic reactions, and even (rarely) death. If fire ants get a hold in our region the impacts will be severe, especially on outdoor activities (think picnics, BBQs and sports), agriculture, native plants and wildlife.
๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐:
ยท Attack livestock and small animals, including pets and native wildlife
ยท Eat the eggs of reptiles and ground nesting birds
ยท Eat the young tender growth of a range of plants, including crops
ยท Stop harvest equipment with their mounds
ยท Damage footpaths, foundations and verandas with their nests
ยท Make outdoor activities more difficult
ยท Cost a lot of money to treat
ยท Sting like crazy, leave welts, hurt A LOT
It is vital that our community stays on top of this if we want to keep these dangerous pests out of our gardens, parks, farms and forests. That means increased funding and stronger efforts to eradicate fire ants.
